But Jesus answered them, “You are wrong, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God. (Matthew 22:29)
We are found incorrect in our spiritual understanding of many things precisely because of our lack of knowledge of the Scriptures!
This happens because either we are disinterested in the Bible, doubt its authority or we simply (unsuccessfully try to) make shortcuts to gaining spiritual understanding (which is not possible)! Often people expect spiritual maturity to come by means fasting and praying, and expecting visions and dreams from God for insight. However, while fasting is essential in many ways, and God is free to do anything in his sovereignty, we must remember that all our spiritual pursuits must be accompanied by commitment to diligently studying the Scriptures for gaining spiritual insight. Ezra 7:10 says, “For Ezra had set his heart to study the Law of the LORD…!”
When the Sadduccees (people Jewish religious sect who do not believe in the resurrection of the dead) came to Jesus, Jesus could have plainly clarified their doubt and helped them. But he points out to them the reason for their error – it was precisely their lack of knowledge of the Scriptures!
This lack of knowledge of the Scriptures is also causing further loss – they do not have the power of God working in and through them. This means that the Bible has power, which is the very power of God and gets transmitted to those who study the Scriptures! Those who do not study the Scriptures, are not only knowledge-less but also power-less!
If we want to grow in our spiritual understanding and have the power of God in us, the first and the most reliable place to go would not be websites, blogs, books, or even meeting other great people and interviewing them, but the Holy Bible – the Word of God. The other things can surely aid in our growth, but the primary source must be the Word of God (the Bible)!
Love the Bible. Love God. Love the truth!
